Japanese beauty has been all the rage for some time and of course, I’ve taken note. Promising deep hydration & anti-aging effects, most products use some key ingredients that have been proven to keep skin young & beautiful.

An added benefit to Japanese skincare is the focus on natural ingredients so you get both super concentrated and pure products. With a skincare obsessed culture and almost ageless results, it’s easy to see why the West seems to be endlessly pursuing these beauty rituals. Here’s to hoping we find the secret and it’s not just superior genetics 😉

Here is my current top 5 in Japanese beauty & a beginners guide of what ingredients to look for:

Boscia Sake Balm

It took me only a few days to fall in love with this product that I now use nightly. Sake gives skin a bright, even tone, thanks to it’s kojic acid. I honestly noticed almost immediately that any darker spots and fine lines on my face had significantly diminished. Sake also provides deep hydration and exfoliation so it’s great to use as a night cream. This product shrinks pores, so if you have larger pores on your face, this product is for you.

Boscia Luminizing Black Mask

Who doesn’t love a good peel off mask?! Easy to remove and fun to disturb the people around you lol. This mask is a thick, black gel texture you need to apply liberally to create an opaque covering of your face. After a half hour, peel to remove impurities- dirt, oil and leave skin feeling super clean. This mask uses activated charcoal (trending right now) which is basically an oil magnet.

Boscia Tsubaki Splash Mask

Also known as Camellia Oil, this ingredient provides deep hydration at a cellular level without clogging pores. I love this product because it’s so easy to use and you have options- either apply one pump directly to your skin in the shower or mix with water to splash on your face. You really do only need a small amount (although I use 2 pumps, not 1.) Just let the oil soak into your skin to be completely rehydrated.

Keana Nadeshiko Rice Mask

This one was too fun to try out. One of my girlfriends recently travelled to Japan and was so on point to pick this up for me while she was there. A classic, Japanese sheet mask with rice bran to hydrate & brighten. The sheets are fresh feeling when on and will leave your skin looking plumper and more youthful.

Sephora Sleeping Mask Collection

So Sephora is of course not a Japanese company but the sleeping mask concept is & so is the variety of options in this collection. I’ve pictured lotus but the rose and green tea options are also great. I was hesitant at first to try a sleeping mask since I thought it would be way too messy, but it’s great to leave these ingredients on to be absorbed as you sleep.

Look also for products that contain:

  • Algae
  • Green Tea
  • Rose Oil- try Fresh Rose Mask (available at sephora.ca) – has rose petals IN it & is incredible
  • Hyaluronic Acid- naturally occurring element in the skin that gives the plump, healthy look
  • Collagen- in powder form, liquid form- that you drink!
