TIPS FOR GLOWING SKIN (FROM THE INSIDE OUT)

Last month I showcased a few of my favourite products from the brand-of-the-moment Glossier, to help create and maintain naturally glowing skin. This year, the beauty world has taken a break from it’s fixation on the matte look and highlighted, radiant, (almost sparkly?) skin is back! Here I’m sharing some of my personal tips for glowing skin (from the inside out) along with some of my favourite products to keep skin radiant through the colder months ahead.

Inside…

In general, you skin will reflect your internal state, and what you put in your body has a huge impact. It’s our largest organ and along with our liver and kidneys, vital to ridding our bodies of toxins and waste. For this reason (and many others), it’s so important to drink water to hydrate from the inside out and ensure optimal organ function and waste elimination. When skin is dry it will lack tone, fullness and may become more acne prone. Water is necessary for two key building blocks for youthful skin- hyaluronic acid and collagen. Hyaluronic acid itself is actually a moisture-binding agent that helps retain water molecules in the skin, resulting in a plumper and more youthful look (read more about HA here.) Most modern dermal fillers also contain this naturally occurring substance as their main ingredient. In addition to a healthy daily intake of water, eating a nutrient-dense, whole food diet will help keep your skin looking it’s best. Avoid processed foods and commit to a mostly plant based diet that is rich in vitamins and minerals. Some beautifying nutrients to look out for: Vitamin A, Vitamin B Complex including B7 (biotin) and B9 (folic acid), Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, Vitamin K & Omega 3 fatty acids. Getting plenty of sleep will always be a skin game changer. We all know this! Our moms told us then, and our dark circles and pale complexion tell us now when we wake up feeling exhausted. It should be stated that I am no angel, and the tips I’ve giving here are rules I both keep and break on a regular basis! Keeping to the 80/20 rule (80% healthy choices, 20% indulgent choices) is a great guideline for balance. However, it should be stated that limiting alcohol and cigarettes (I know, I know) are ideal for maintaining glowing skin.

Outside…

Getting further away from my early twenties every day has also drastically decreased my skins ability to bounce back after a night of not properly taking off my makeup (further to point above, and usually on those same nights.) Makeup wipes are really not gonna cut it and if you can properly remove makeup and cleanse every night, please do! Sleeping in makeup will definitely result in dry skin, clogged pores and increase the possibility of a break out. I have even read many articles identifying a proper cleansing routine as critical to minimizing signs of aging (aka fine lines and wrinkles.) Find a good exfoliant and use 1-3 times a week depending on skin type to remove dead skin and keep pores clear and complexion bright. Maintaining moisture in the skin is key to a youthful look. A hydrated complexion will camouflage fine lines, shrink pores and give the appearance of plumpness- all hallmarks of youth. You can hydrate the skin in many different ways- serums, oils, creams and various types of masks. A high quality moisturizer and an eye cream or serum (read all about the benefits of a good eye cream here) are great investments if you’re looking to boost radiance and maintaining glowing skin. Try products that contain Vitamin C or Rose oil– two ingredients I personally love and look for when shopping. Both options work to minimize the appearance of aging by reducing sun spots and are effective, natural skin brighteners.

When in doubt, fake it…

When all above fails, fake it! Glowing skin is back in and with it some incredible new products and trends to play with. Try mixing a glow serum into your regular day cream for an all over but subtle glow, or try a moisturizer than has an illuminating finish (like this one.) For a more subtle effect, dab glow serum high on the cheekbones and around to the temples making a V shape. Highlighters are trending right now and available in all different hues and finishes, giving options for all skin types and tones. Try a liquid highlighter if you have a drier skin type or powder for normal-oily. Finally, as the days get colder the temptation to jump in a tanning bed for some quick colour can be hard to resist. Using a high quality self-tanner (lots of options out there, including more natural for healthy conscious beauties) and building to create a natural looking glow can help curb the urge.
